Energy-Efficient Buildings

In the summer of 2018, the City of Dorval launched a project to improve the energy efficiency of three municipal buildings: the Dorval Arena, the Westwood Sports Centre, and the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre.

By replacing the ice refrigeration system and integrating a number of energy-efficiency measures, the City now considerably reduces its energy consumption (44.7%) and greenhouse gas emissions (47.6%). Moreover, citizens and municipal employees will have access to improved, safer facilities.

DORVAL ARENA AND WESTWOOD SPORTS CENTRE
Installing a new carbon dioxide refrigeration system significantly limits the impact on human health and the environment. This natural refrigerant is known for its efficiency and supports energy recovery. The heat produced by the refrigeration systems is recovered, in part, to heat certain ventilation systems, the water for the Zamboni, and the domestic water in the locker rooms. This measure alone will reduce overall natural gas consumption by 35%.

SARTO-DESNOYERS COMMUNITY CENTRE
Replacing old boilers with new condensing boilers maximizes the heating network and minimizes maintenance activities.

SYSTEM AUTOMATION AND LIGHTING UPGRADES ON ALL THREE BUILDINGS
All three of these buildings have had their lighting converted to LED technology, allowing for an overall improvement of the visual environment. Also, it is now possible to pre-configure and control the lighting intensity above the ice remotely, based on the activities taking place.

Automating the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems optimizes equipment operations and ensures a comfortable environment for those using the facilities. This measure will generate energy savings of $47,000 per year, notably through more efficient management of equipment scheduling, more precise temperature control, and improved alignment of system operations and needs.
