One eRead Canada is a digital bilingual book club, presented by the Canadian Urban Libraries Council (CULC), with the support of CBC/Radio-Canada. During the month of April, hundreds of public libraries across Canada will offer free, unlimited eBook and eAudiobook access to Hotline by Dimitri Nasrallah.
A 2023 Canada Reads Finalist and longlisted for the 2022 Scotiabank Giller Prize, the story is an ode to the 1980s and one woman’s poignant and powerful struggle to overcome the challenges of immigration.
It's 1986, and Muna Heddad and her eight-year-old son Omar settle in Montreal at the beginning of winter, leaving behind a civil war in Lebanon. The only work Muna can find is at a weight-loss center as a hotline operator. All day, she takes calls from people responding to ads seen in magazines or on TV. Though she is enjoying great success at work, the young single mother is preoccupied with her child, who is always alone, both at school and at home, and who conceals a deep sadness… A tribute to the perseverance of migrant mothers, Hotline offers a breath of humanity in its tender language...
Look for Hotline in the Library’s OverDrive, hoopla and Prêtnumérique collections.
