The City of Dorval Reduces Its Environmental Footprint

Published on 06-28-2018

The City of Dorval is proud to announce the launch of a project to improve the energy efficiency of three municipal buildings: the Dorval Arena, the Westwood Sports Centre, and the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre. Most of the work will take place this summer, while there are essentially no activities at the arenas.

Replacing the ice refrigeration system and integrating a number of energy-efficiency measures will considerably reduce energy consumption (44.7%) and greenhouse gas emissions (47.6%). Moreover, citizens and municipal employees will have access to improved, safer facilities.

DORVAL ARENA AND WESTWOOD SPORTS CENTRE
The City of Dorval strives to comply with the Montreal Protocol to phase out and eliminate the use of ozone depleting substances. Installing a new carbon dioxide refrigeration system will significantly limit the impact on human health and the environment. This natural refrigerant is known for its efficiency and supports energy recovery. The heat produced by the refrigeration systems will be recovered, in part, to heat certain ventilation systems, the water for the Zamboni, and the domestic water in the locker rooms. This measure alone will reduce overall natural gas consumption by 35%.

SARTO-DESNOYERS COMMUNITY CENTRE
Replacing old boilers with new condensing boilers will maximize the heating network and minimize maintenance activities.

SYSTEM AUTOMATION AND LIGHTING UPGRADES – THREE BUILDINGS
All three of these buildings will have their lighting converted to LED technology, allowing for an overall improvement of the visual environment. Also, it will be possible to pre-configure and control remotely the lighting intensity above the ice, based on the activities taking place.

Automating the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems will optimize equipment operations and ensure a comfortable environment for those using the facilities. This measure will generate energy savings in the order of $47,000 per year, notably through more efficient management of equipment scheduling, more precise temperature control, and improved alignment of system operations and needs.

This project represents a $3.8M investment, self-financed through energy savings over a 13-year period. Furthermore, the cost of the work is partially borne by the support program for upgrading municipal arenas of the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l’Enseignement Supérieur ($1.3M), the ÉcoPerformance program of the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles, as well as by Hydro-Québec and Énergir, for a total of approximately $1.8M.
