In Case of Disaster

Violent winds, flooding, earthquakes. These are some of the disasters that we are confronted with more and more each year, no matter where we live in Quebec. It is possible, however, to prevent some of the damages caused by a disaster or to reduce their extent by taking some simple precautions.

You are the first person responsible for your safety!

When a disaster occurs or emergency measures are declared, it is up to you to take the first steps to ensure your safety, the safety of your family, and to safeguard your property.

What can you do?

  • Get information on the disaster risks in your municipality and on the emergency measures needed to protect yourself.
  • Collect the necessary items for your essential needs and keep a three-day supply in your house (drinking water, non-perishable food, battery-operated radio, flashlight, batteries, etc.)*.
  • Make an emergency plan.
  • Ensure your belongings appropriately.

* Don’t forget to replace batteries, water, and non-perishable food regularly.

Shelter

If a disaster strikes, the City of Dorval offers citizens several shelters, as part of its emergency measures plan. Depending on the magnitude of the disaster, the number of shelters can vary. However, here are the two main shelters available in case of a disaster:

  1. Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre
  2. Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre

In these centres, food, first aid kits, blankets, and so forth, are available to victims.

Community Aid Program

In order to improve the speed and efficiency of the City’s response during disaster situations (heat waves, ice storm, etc.), we invite all residents who may require special assistance, such as seniors and persons living alone or with any disabilities, to register with the Community Aid Service of the City of Dorval. To register, print the form which you will find by clicking here, complete it, and forward it to the address indicated thereon. All information provided will remain strictly confidential and will be used to intervene in disaster situations only. For more information on that form, please call at 514 633-4100.

Industrial Park and Disaster Risks

Dorval has many businesses in its industrail park. Their presence generates important economic benefits, but also sometimes some risks due to the production, the use, and the storage of hazardous materials.

Dural
The company Dural is established in Dorval since 1960. It develops, manufactures, and markets various adhesives for the industrial and residential uses. In accordance with the 2019 federal Environmental Emergency Regulations, Dural has implemented an environmental emergency plan designed to protect employees, members of our community, and the environment.

How would the Dorval population be informed if an accident were to occur?
The Agglomeration of Montreal's Civil Security Centre is in charge of communications in case of an accidental spill. It will send an emergency message that will be automatically received by residential phone lines without registration being required. A press release will be published online and sent to the media, and the information will be relayed by the City of Dorval through its various communication tools, namely its website, its Facebook page, and its cyber news.

In the case of a major emergency, the agglomeration of Montreal could seek assistance from the “Québec Alert Ready” service. This service can interrupt current radio and television broadcasts to convey an emergency-related message. It also allows the transmission of SMS messages to all mobile cellular subscribers without registration being required. It is the same service that is used for the AMBER alerts.

What to do in case of an accident
You must follow the instructions below. This will help ensure everyone's safety and facilitate the work of first responders:

  1. Enter the nearest building quickly to avoid breathing toxic substances.
  2. Close all doors and windows, and use rags to block any ventilation openings.
  3. Turn ventilation systems off to keep toxic substances out.
  4. Turn on the radio to receive instructions from authorities.
  5. Refrain from making phone calls in order to keep lines free for emergency services. Call 9-1-1 for emergencies only.
  6. Leave your children in school to avoid exposing them or yourself to the toxic substance.
