Pickups and Waste Materials

A contractor picks up the recyclable materials along the streets every Monday, even on statutory holidays, except on December 25 and January 1 when the pickup is cancelled.

The bins must be placed on the property, near the sidewalk or at the curb, or between the ditch and the roadway, in front of the collection unit, after 7 p.m. on the eve of the collection day, and must be retrieved by its owner before 7 p.m. on collection day. The wheels must be turned toward the building and the lid must be closed.

Because the pickup of the bins is mechanized, no items deposited outside of the wheeled bin (cardboards, paper bags, etc.) are picked up. Furthermore, to facilitate the pickup by the collection trucks' mecanical arm, roll-out bins must be placed at least 30 centimetres away from any object or obstacle (other bins, cars, post, etc.).

It is not necessary to separate paper and cardboard from other materials. Each single-family dwelling and each multi-dwelling building of less than eight units (duplex, triplex, etc.) has a wheeled bin of 120, 240, or 360 litres, which was delivered by the City of Dorval.

Recycling bins remain the property of the City and must be left behind if you move. In the event of loss or damage, the bin will be replaced by the Public Works Department. Proof of residence in Dorval will be required to obtain another.

Figuring out what goes in the bin isn't complicated. Just ask yourself: is it a container, packaging, or printed matter?

Did You Know?

• A container comes with a cap or a lid.
• Packaging is used to easily transport a product.
• Containers and packaging made of degradable plastic should not be placed in the bin. They will contaminate all other recyclable materials.

• Aerosol and protective polystyrene packaging: you can drop them off in the Ballantyne Park parking lot (520 boulevard Bouchard) during the City's two annual hazardous household waste drop-offs, or bring the polystyrene items to Public Works at any time.

The pickup of household waste is held once a week for the entire Dorval territory.

The exact collection day is THURSDAY for everyone.

Household waste is picked up between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., even on statutory holidays, except for Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1).

• Household waste must be placed on the property, near the sidewalk or at the curb, or between the ditch and the roadway, in front of the collection unit.
• It must not be put out before 7 p.m. on the eve of the collection day, and containers must be picked up by their owners before 7 p.m. on collection day.

Garbage collectors do not pick up:

• Dangerous, flammable, explosive, radioactive, pathological, toxic or acidic materials
• Asphalt shingles
• Derelict vehicles
• Tires. To dispose of them, bring them to a local car dealership
• Firearms
• Recyclable materials
• Hazardous household waste
• Residential, commercial or industrial construction, demolition or renovation materials or debris, resulting from work carried out by people other than the occupant of the collection unit
• Bulk excavation or landscaping materials such as earth, sand, stone, rock, asphalt, concrete, tree stumps
• Large objects (appliances, cooling appliances, chairs, tables, desks, commodes, mattresses, etc.).

* Only building managers can contact the City. Tenants and owners of units must advise their building manager of their wish to implement the pickup service.

Single-family dwellings, multi-dwelling buildings of less than 8 units, businesses in the residential sector, and institutions (schools, churches, etc.) benefit from an organic waste pickup.

Organic waste is made up of two large categories:

1. Food waste (fruits, vegetables, meats, soiled food cartons, etc.)*
2. Green waste (dead leaves, garden waste, etc.)

* We recommend these two methods to dispose of food waste:

Method 1

Line your small countertop bin with used newspaper or a paper bag, and fill it with organic waste. Wrap the newspaper into a secure bundle or close the bag tightly, and transfer it to your brown bin.

Method 2

Line your brown bin with a larger paper bag. Place organic material directly into your small countertop bin. Transfer the loose material into your lined brown bin. Close your brown bin bag tightly.

• The use of newspapers or paper bags in the bins is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended for sanitary reasons.

Important information

• All organic waste must be deposited in the brown wheeled bin that is picked up every Wednesday, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., except on December 25 and January 1 when the pickup is cancelled. 
• The wheeled bins must be placed at the curb after 7 p.m. on the eve of the collection day.
• The wheels of the bin must be turned toward the building.
• The lid must be closed.
• The handle must be unlocked.
• To facilitate the pickup by the collection trucks' mecanical arm, roll-out bins must be placed at least 30 centimetres away from any object or obstacle (other bins, cars, post, etc.).
• The brown bin remains the property of the City and must be left behind if you move.
• NO PLASTIC BAGS (EVEN BIODEGRADABLE, COMPOSTABLE, OR CORN-BASED) ARE ACCEPTED.
  

Green waste may be deposited in the organic waste bin. It is possible to dispose of surplus green waste in other containers without their lid (e.g. an empty garbage can). We recommend, however, using biodegradable containers, such as paper bags and cardboard boxes, which will also be picked up. Green waste must not be deposited in bulk at the curb.

Instead of simply throwing away old objects you no longer use, we invite you to help preserve our environment by giving them to organizations that specialize in their reuse.

In Dorval, many businesses dedicate their work to the reuse of discarded objects, and residents can bring them their used objects, such as books, appliances, computers, furniture, toys, sports equipment, and so forth. In some cases, the organization can even, on call, provide a pickup service.

Ecocentres

The City of Dorval does not have an ecocentre on its territory, but invites its citizens to drop by other ecocentres in the surrounding cities/boroughs.

Ecocentres are sorting centres for Montreal Island residents, where they can drop off items for recovery, items that are excluded from the household waste pickup, such as:

• Appliances
• Large objects
• Recyclable materials (paper, carton, glass, plastic, metal)
• Construction, renovation, and demolition waste
• Household hazardous waste

These items are, however, collected by the City of Dorval otherwise than with the household waste pickup.

Ecocentres also accept items that are not accepted by the City, such as:

• Clothing items in good condition
• Old tires

Reuse, recycling, composting and other appropriate forms of recovery make it possible to considerably reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

After the Holiday Season, the City offers special pickups to collect Christmas trees placed in front of your house, by the curb (not IN the street). In order for a tree to be picked up, all lights, decorations, and nails must be removed. Read all the details in the City's publications at that time of the year.

From April to November inclusive, branches are collected one week per month, starting on the first Monday of each month. No branches are allowed at the curb outside of that specific week. Additionally, there are no pickups for branches from December to March.

Branches must not be mixed with CRD debris or large abjects, and must result from work carried out by the occupant. Branches from contractors' work will not be collected.

Branches must be put out on the eve of the collection week (in other words, on Sunday). The collection truck will pass in front of every residence only once between Monday and Friday of that special week. For the waste pickup calendar, click here.

Only single-family dwellings or condominium units benefit from the branches pickup.

To prevent serious injuries to employees and to facilitate the pickup, please follow these recommendations:

• Branches and clippings from bushes and hedges must be placed close to the road, on your property, so that their shaft points towards the street
• Roots, stumps, metal or plastic objects, as well as rocks, must be remove
• Clippings from prickly or thorny bushes and shrubs must be piled separately
• Small branches (no greater than 5 cm in diameter and 1 m in length) can be disposed of in the organic waste (brown bin).

Should these recommendations not be followed, a notice explaining areas of non-conformity will be left in the mail box for future reference.

Each fall, the City offers several dead leaf pickups for single-family dwellings as a way to improve its waste reduction effort and produce compost that will be subsequently offered to residents. Keep an eye on Dorval’s website and publications for more details.

Take note that your bags must not be put out before 7 p.m. on the eve of the collection day. Furthermore, only big paper bags (the ones distributed by the City of Dorval and others sold at various stores) will be collected in these special pickups.

Even if it is sometimes written on certain compostable plastic bags made of corn or starch that they are compatible with municipal pickups, such is not the case in many municipalities located in the West Island, including Dorval. As such, they will not be picked up.

Remember that the paper bags should be used only for the purpose of this composting program. They must not be filled with grass clippings, branches, tomato plants, and so on. These items must be disposed of in their respective pickups.

The rest of the year

As for the rest of the year, leaves will be collected, free of charge, with the organic waste pickup held every Wednesday. Loose leaves on your property will not be picked up.

It is prohibited to rake or dump leaves in the street, as they can clog the sewer system and create traffic hazards. Violations are subject to fines.

From April to November inclusive, CRD debris are collected one week per month, starting on the first Monday of each month. No materials is allowed at the curb outside of that specific week. Additionally, there are no pickups for these items from December to March.

Construction, renovation and demolition debris, and landscaping and excavation material in bulk must not exceed 2 m³, must not be mixed with branches or large abjects, and must result from work carried out by the occupant. Waste from contractors' work will not be collected.

CRD debris must be put out on the eve of the collection week (in other words, on Sunday). The collection truck will pass in front of every residence only once between Monday and Friday of that special week. For the waste pickup calendar, click here.

Only single-family dwellings benefit from the CRD pickup.

Are considered CRD debris:

• Construction, renovation and demolition debris with any nails removed or flattened (wood, plywood, gypsum board, melamine, electrical wiring, aggregates, brick, mortar, etc.)
• Waste material from landscaping and excavation
• Stone, sand, turf, concrete and concrete slabs, and soil
• Cladding materials
• Flat glass, broken glass (in a rigid container)
• Windows
• Tiles - ceramic or other material
• Carpet and underlay
• Baths, washbasins, toilets

A HHW drop-off is held this fall, together with the collection of information and communications technologies waste and polystyrene articles:

1. Saturday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Ballantyne Park parking lot (520 Bouchard Boulevard, Dorval, Quebec  H9S 1B2)

Propane gas tanks are accepted full or empty. Any other empty container is not collected with the HHW collection. Open or leaky containers, as well as any 20-litre (5 gallons) container, are also refused.

The following are considered HHW:

• From the kitchen: oven cleaners, etc.
• From the bathroom: disinfectants, etc.
• From the workshop: paint (alkyd, latex), sealants, rust inhibitors, varnishes, oils, strippers, thinners, solvents, wood preservatives, acids, bases, oxidant, etc.
• From the garage: gas, fuel, antifreeze, brake fluid, motor oil, batteries, etc.
• From the garden: weed killers, insecticides, fungicides, pesticides, rat poison, pool maintenance products, empty or full propane tanks, etc.
• From the house in general: aerosols, dry cleaning solvents, mothballs, batteries (rechargeable or not), light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, charcoal lighting fluid, etc.

For public security reasons, it is strictly forbidden to bring HHW to the collection site at times other than those designated for collection.

Collection of HHW is for household waste only. Companies, industries, and institutions may hire, at their expense, a contractor for the disposal of their hazardous waste.

Only single-family dwellings or condominium units benefit from the large objects pickup.

* In order to avoid contaminating mattresses and the spreading of bedbugs, we ask that you wrap all mattresses in a transparent plastic cover or bag before placing them by the curb.

Ecocentres

Do you need to dispose of electrical household appliances of any size (stove, toaster, etc.), melamine furniture, or mattresses? The Saint-Laurent and LaSalle ecocentres have been optimized to improve the recovery of certain materials:

The City of Dorval is proud to unroll a new environmental pilot project: disposable mask collection and recycling boxes.

A disposable mask recycling bin will be placed at the entrance of the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre and the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre with the hopes of recycling between 1500 and 2000 disposable masks in a safe and responsible manner. Not only will these masks no longer find themselves in a landfill, but they will be granted a second life and recycled into hospital gowns! Furthermore, for every full box received, the supplier will plant a tree next spring!

So don’t trash, stash! Start saving your masks so that next time you head out to either community centre, you can bring your soiled masks to responsibly dispose of them. Its a simple way of contributing to respect for our planet.

All disposable masks, including procedural/surgical, KN95, and N95 masks are accepted in these bins.

The City of Dorval is offering its residents the possibility of depositing their polystyrene items (plastic #6) at Public Works at any time.

Prior to drop-off, it is important to properly rinse your polystyrene items and to remove labels, packaging films, absorbent pads, and any other material that may be present.

1. Polystyrene food containers: Coffee cups, single-use plates and bowls, packaging trays for meat, fish, and poultry, egg packaging, and so forth.
2. Rigid food containers: Mushroom and berry packaging trays, plates and utensils, containers for single-serving yogurts, transparent cups and domes for beverages, ready-to-eat packaging, small milk and coffee cream containers, and so forth.
3. Protective packaging: Electronic and home appliance packaging, winter protection material, crates for vegetables, and so forth.

A polystyrene article drop-off is held this fall, together with the collection of hazardous household waste and information and communications waste:

The City offers a recycling program for batteries (rechargeable or not). Rechargeable batteries are used mainly in mechanical tools, cordless and cellular phones, laptops, camcorders, walkie-talkies, and remotely-controlled toys.

Residents can dispose of their rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries at the following places:

• Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre, from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre, from Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• City Hall, from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Dorval Library, during regular opening hours
• Public Works, from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Edgar Rouleau Arena and Westwood Sports Centre, during regular opening hours

Also, thanks to a recycling program involving every fire stations in Montreal, it is also possible to dispose of rechargeable batteries at the following addresses:

The City of Dorval offers a recycling program for used or unwanted personal care items. A collection box for this purpose can be found near the reception desk at the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre (1335 Lakeshore Drive) and at the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre (1945 Parkfield Avenue).

• Blow-dryer attachments (combs and diffusers)
• Empty shampoo and conditioner bottles
• Empty ointment tins

Unaccepted items

• Electronic items, such as blow dryers and straighteners
• Biomedical or bio-hazardous waste
• Any contents of packaging, such as nail polish, lotion, soap, or ointments

The contents of this box is returned to a place where the collected waste is sorted into categories, based on material composition. The materials are then consolidated and sent for additional processing so they can become usable. Recycled materials are transformed into various products including picnic benches, imitation wood, and containers such as watering cans.
