The preventive sweeping of chimneys constitutes a wise decision to improve the safety of your home. The City of Dorval gives out the funds earmarked for this program to property owners rather than to contractors. This approach has numerous advantages for residents who now have the luxury of choosing:
Consequently, the City reimburses the following amounts to property owners:
To obtain their refund, residents must present themselves at City Hall, at 60 Martin Avenue, with the original bill on which appears the name and logo of the contractor. Please take note that all requests for a reimbursement must be made within 12 months following the date of the chimney sweeping work. No reimbursement will be given out for work dating back further than 12 months.
Please take note that this approach was adopted following numerous demands for exemption from the program, complaints about the difficulty in obtaining a specific time to undertake the work, the fear of suffering property damage during the chimney sweeping, claims for property damage, as well as a false sense of security that a too brief chimney sweeping could cause.
To benefit from the services of a chimney sweeper, consult the Yellow Pages, under “Chimney Cleaning & Sweeping”. Note that the City has no ties with any particular chimney sweeper. However, we recommend that you hire the services of a chimney sweeping company accredited by the Association des professionnels du chauffage (APC) in order to ensure a job well done.

Violent winds, flooding, earthquakes. These are some of the disasters that we are confronted with more and more each year, no matter where we live in Quebec. It is possible, however, to prevent some of the damages caused by a disaster or to reduce their extent by taking some simple precautions.
When a disaster occurs or emergency measures are declared, it is up to you to take the first steps to ensure your safety, the safety of your family, and to safeguard your property.
* Don’t forget to replace batteries, water, and non-perishable food regularly.

How would the Dorval population be informed if an accident were to occur?
The Agglomeration of Montreal's Civil Security Centre is in charge of communications in case of an accidental spill. It will send an emergency message that will be automatically received by residential phone lines without registration being required. A press release will be published online and sent to the media, and the information will be relayed by the City of Dorval through its various communication tools, namely its website, its Facebook page, and its cyber news.
In the case of a major emergency, the agglomeration of Montreal could seek assistance from the “Québec Alert Ready” service. This service can interrupt current radio and television broadcasts to convey an emergency-related message. It also allows the transmission of SMS messages to all mobile cellular subscribers without registration being required. It is the same service that is used for the AMBER alerts.
What to do in case of an accident

The City of Dorval provides a patrol service to watch over neighbourhoods, parks, schools, as well as municipal buildings and installations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Its presence on the territory contributes also to improve the safety of residents and serves as prevention for vandalism and crime. Furthermore, it has been mandated with the application of some municipal by-laws, namely the by-laws concerning parking, nuisances, watering, animal control, and waste.

In the pursuit of its mission to increase road safety on its territory, the City is proud to offer its residents road safety signs with a reminder that driving slowly is safer.
There are currently two designs available: one with our mascot Jet and one portraying a family. Easy to install, each sign comes with a spider step stake that is easy to plant in the ground.
Residents who wish to obtain a sign can contact the Mayor’s Office by calling 514 633-4042 or by sending an email to mberube@ville.dorval.qc.ca, and give their name and address, as well as the choice of the visual they would like to have (upon inventory availability). The sign (one per address) can then be picked up at City Hall (60 Martin Avenue).
Please note that the distribution of the signs is free. Once obtained, the sign remains the property of the resident who can then install it on his property, where he deems the most impactful and visible.
The City strongly hopes that many citizens will take part in the promotion of road safety.
One can never say it enough: driving slowly IS safer!
