Community Aid has been serving Dorval since 1977. Its core mission remains to inform, support, and guide citizens facing various social challenges.

Firmly rooted in the Dorval community, Community Aid actively contributes to the well-being and quality of life of residents through a range of confidential, accessible, and personalized services.

Citizen Journey

Community Aid supports Dorval residents through different stages of life by offering services tailored to their needs:

Psychosocial support and disaster relief
Listening, guidance, and referrals for individuals experiencing personal or family difficulties and emergency aid and support for individuals affected by disasters (fire, flood, etc.).
Financial support
One-time or temporary assistance to help individuals facing economic hardship.
Prevention – First Citizens
Prevention and awareness services aimed at seniors to promote their safety, autonomy, and well-being.

Psychosocial Support and Disaster Relief

In Quebec, the need for food assistance and basic essentials continues to grow, especially in the greater metropolitan area. To help support local families, the City of Dorval is setting up ongoing collection boxes in several municipal buildings, extending our efforts beyond the traditional holiday food basket period.

One simple donation can brighten an entire winter.

Program goal

This initiative aims to provide concrete, ongoing support to individuals and families in vulnerable situations, thanks to the generosity of Dorval residents.

By dropping off a few items during your visits to our facilities, you are directly helping your neighbours.

Collection locations

Collection bins will be installed at designated areas in the following buildings:
• Dorval Aquatic and Sports Complex
• Edgar Rouleau Arena
• Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre
• Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre

What can you donate?

We accept the following food and essential items:
• Dry or canned food
(e.g., rice, pasta, legumes, soups, sauces, etc.)
• Hygiene products
(soap, sanitary products, etc.)
• Unexpired and unopened items only

❌ We do not accept:
• Alcohol
• Perishable items or opened products

Community Aid Food Bank

Community Aid provides last-resort food aid tailored to the family situation and specific needs of Dorval residents experiencing financial hardship.

Monthly Food Assistance

This service promotes a varied and nutritious diet for individuals facing financial insecurity. Assistance is provided regularly, once a month.

Each basket includes non-perishable food items, fresh fruits and vegetables, sources of protein, dairy products, and basic hygiene items (depending on donations received).

Christmas Baskets

Available only during the three weeks leading up to Christmas, these festive baskets are offered upon prior registration in the fall with Dorval's Community Aid. They aim to bring comfort and joy to Dorval families during the holiday season.

Access to Food Assistance Services

Appointment Scheduling
To access the food bank service, citizens must first meet with a Community Aid staff member. This appointment allows for an assessment of eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria
Individuals aged 18 and over living at the same address must provide the following documents:

Photo ID
(e.g., passport, driver’s license, immigration document, health insurance card)
Recent Proof of Residence (less than 3 months)
(e.g., municipal tax bill, electricity or phone bill, credit card statement, current school report card)
Proof of Income
Pre-tax income must be below the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) established by the Institut de la statistique du Québec. Provide a recent document (less than 3 months), such as:
- Notice of assessment
- Pay stub
- Statement of last-resort financial assistance
- Bank statement

How It Works
Basket pickup is by appointment only, during the Community Aid’s opening hours. No delivery service is available. Beneficiaries must bring their own bags.

This service is available to all Dorval residents, by appointment, either in person or by phone. Staff members assess each individual's situation, recommend appropriate resources, and guide citizens in accessing the services they need.

Examples of Support Offered:

Assistance with completing forms
Help with writing letters and asserting rights
Referrals to community and government services
Occasional support for vulnerable populations

These two therapeutic support programs are offered free of charge and in complete confidentiality by qualified professionals (psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, etc.).

Parent Support
This program is designed for parents and their children experiencing family or relational difficulties. It aims to foster better communication and strengthen family bonds.
Teen-Plus
Targeted at youth aged 14 to 25, this program provides therapeutic support to help them navigate challenging personal, academic, or social situations.

Access to Services

An initial meeting with a Community Aid staff member is required to assess needs and determine the most suitable program.

Community Aid offers follow-up services for vulnerable individuals, those with reduced autonomy, or living with a disability. By registering with Community Aid, these citizens enable the City of Dorval to respond more quickly and effectively in the event of a disaster, such as:

Ice storms
Floods
Fires
Water contamination issues
Extreme or oppressive heat

This service is designed to ensure the safety and well-being of those most at risk during exceptional events.

To register, print the form, complete it, and forward it to the address indicated thereon. All information provided will remain strictly confidential and will be used to intervene in disaster situations only.

Prevention – First Citizens

Community Aid offers free basic health care to Dorval residents aged 60 and over. Once a week, a certified nurse with geriatric experience provides the following services:

Blood pressure and vital signs monitoring, as needed (pulse, temperature, respiration)
Ear cleaning and wax removal
Blood glucose level reading
Administration of eye drops (with prescription)

Services are available by appointment at the Community Aid offices.

This service is available to Dorval residents aged 55 and over, by appointment, at the Community Aid offices. Care is provided by a qualified professional, and fees are the responsibility of the client.

Services Offered:

Nail trimming
Reduction of calluses and corns
Light massage with moisturizing cream

This free service offers occasional assistance to eligible seniors. Students employed by the City of Dorval carry out various tasks:

Outdoor: lawn mowing, raking, gardening, etc.
Indoor: window cleaning, wall washing

Eligibility Criteria:

Be aged 60 or over
Not reside with anyone under the age of 60
Have a pre-tax income below the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) established by the Institut de la statistique du Québec

This phone service, offered Monday to Friday, is designed to check in on seniors, individuals with disabilities, or those experiencing loss of autonomy. A daily call provides a reassuring presence and helps maintain a connection with vulnerable citizens.

Financial Support

Community Aid participates in the Income Tax Assistance – Volunteer Program, jointly administered by the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec. This program allows trained volunteers to help low-income individuals complete their tax returns.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the service, individuals must have a simple tax situation and meet the following maximum income thresholds:

For a single person: $40,000
For a couple or an adult with one child: $55,000
For each additional dependent: $5,000 additional to eligible income

Several grant programs are available for individuals and families who meet income criteria. All applications must be evaluated with a Community Aid staff member.

Available Programs:

Youth Trust Fund
Managed by the Dorval Athletic Association, this fund provides financial assistance to youth for participation in sports activities (soccer, hockey, skating, etc.).

Dorval Access to Leisure Program
Allows eligible residents to participate in recreational, cultural, and sports activities offered by the City at a reduced cost.

School Supplies Support
Assistance in obtaining school materials for children from low-income families.

Jane Rajca Scholarship
An annual $1,000 scholarship awarded to a post-secondary student receiving services from Community Aid. The application form is available upon request at Community Aid.

Types of Accepted Donations

Monetary Donations
Financial contributions go directly to the Community Aid fund and help support the services offered to the population. We accept donations by cash, cheque, or gift card. A tax receipt is issued for any donation of $20 or more.

Food Donations
Non-perishable, unopened, and unexpired food items (e.g., pasta, cereal, canned goods, jams), as well as hygiene products, household items, kitchen supplies, and pet products, are always welcome to help stock the monthly food baskets.

Please note: Due to limited storage space, we do not accept furniture or appliances.

Other Places to Donate Goods
However, it is possible to donate clothing, school supplies, or other useful items to local organizations. To find out about drop-off locations or current needs, please contact Community Aid.
