Mission Monarch

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Location given following registration Free

For age 5 and over (children must be accompanied by a responsible person age 16 or over)

Monarch butterflies are an endangered species in Canada, but many communities, including the City of Dorval, are taking measures to support this species, such as planting milkweed and supporting its habitat.

An especially important period is July 31 to August 9, which is the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz. During this period, residents are encouraged to participate in Mission Monarch by:

  • Finding milkweed
  • Inspecting it for Monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, or adult butterflies
  • Recording these observations

The iNaturalist app is an ideal choice for this program, but additional information can also be found at https://mission-monarch.org.

Special event

While residents are encouraged to participate throughout this period anywhere they find milkweed (even at home!), a dedicated event is scheduled on August 1, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Participants will be asked to count and check all the milkweed in a specific area in Dorval as part of an ongoing survey.

Advance online registration is required due to a limited number of places. Participants will receive information about the event location following their registration.

In case of poor weather, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, August 2
