Would you like to try beadwork or discover this meticulous art? During this three-hour workshop, you’ll create a beautiful bracelet inspired by the autumn mushroom, while learning the fundamentals of beadwork. You’ll be guided step by step to craft a unique piece. All materials are included, and you’ll leave with your bracelet as well as new skills to continue creating at home!

Awaska Art

During October, the activity room in the Dorval Library will be styled as a whimsical, woodland “café-terrace”—a cozy, inviting space with bistro‑style tables, bean bags, and soft lighting—perfect for relaxing, creating, studying, or just hanging out.

Each week will feature a different self-guided theme to explore — magnetic poetry, board games, colouring, origami — as well as some fun pop‑up surprises sprinkled throughout the month.

Would you like to learn the basics of cake decorating? During this two-hour workshop, you’ll discover the essential techniques for decorating a cake: how to level and stack cakes, how to prepare Swiss meringue buttercream, the piping techniques using bags and tips, all about fillings, and more. You’ll be guided step by step to create your own personalized mini cake. All materials are included, and you’ll leave with your sweet creation as well as new cake-decorating skills!

Would you like to discover the art of mosaic with the Mosaic Art Studio? During this two-hour creative workshop, you’ll design and personalize your own mosaic candle holder, a perfect balance of relaxation, creativity, and cultural immersion. Inspired by an art form over 600 years old that once illuminated the palaces of the Ottoman Empire, this activity introduces you to a tradition rich in history. No experience is required: instructors will guide you step by step to help you create a unique piece you’ll be proud of. With a wide variety of colours and shapes available, you can let your creativity run free and fully customize your candle holder. All materials are provided. Description: Discover the elegance and athleticism of artistic swimming! No prior experience needed, this course is designed for beginners and combines fitness, fun, and creativity in a supportive, water-based environment.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 25 metres and thread water for 3 minutes without assistance of a personal flotation device.

Skills to be developed:

• Learn fundamental sculling techniques.
• Learn basic figures and teamwork-based routines while improving breath control, flexibility, and coordination.

Description: This course covers fundamental diving techniques, from basic standing dives to proper takeoff, entry, and body control with an emphasis on safety, balance, and coordination. Perfect for beginners looking to build confidence on the diving board.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim a full lap of the pool (25 metres). Also, must be able to jump off the diving board and swim unassisted to the side of the pool.

Skills to be developed:

• Front dives
• Tuck dives

Participation capacity: 10 participants per class

For ages: 13 and over on the day of final exam, unless the participant has completed the Bronze Star. Proof of age must be provided at the first class.

Description: This course introduces advanced rescue techniques and covers the fundamentals of performing rescues in more structured environments.

Requirement: This course is mandatory for lifeguard certification.

Participants must attend all sessions, as well as the exam, to be certified, and be ready to swim in each class since it is held primarily in the water. Absences may be tolerated in certain circumstances.

Note that some institutions allow those who have taken this course to work as an assistant lifeguard, starting at the age of 15. Please refer to the Régie du bâtiment du Québec for more information. However, the City of Dorval only hires those with the National Lifeguard certification.

Prerequisites: 

• Able to swim 400 metres continuously (preferably in less than 12 minutes).
• Able to swim front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke.
• Comfortable swimming underwater.
• Able to get to the bottom of the deep end of the pool (3 metres deep).

Materials: A pocket mask is required (available at the DASC).

Skills to be developed:

• Skills and knowledge to assist others:
  • Treatment of victims for various conditions.
  • Learn to recognize different types of drowning and apply the appropriate rescue techniques.
  • Conduct in-water searches.
• Introduction to rescue simulations:
  • Put your knowledge and skills into action in fun and playful simulations.
  • Save conscious and unconscious victims.
  • Gain the confidence to carry out rescues when you are the sole trained responder.
• Lifesaving skills and physical strength:
  • Towing unconscious victims and pulling them out of the water.
  • Turning your clothes into a life jacket.

A 3-basket disc golf course is located at Windsor Park (corner of Dawson Avenue and Fénelon Boulevard). It is available year-round, seven days a week. 

Equipment loan

Discs may be rented, free of charge, at the reception of Dorval Aquatic and Sports Complex (1295 Dawson Avenue), in exchange for your Dorval Activity Card or a piece of identification, according to the following schedule:

• Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Due to its prime location on the shores of Lake St-Louis, Dorval can offer its residents a number of nautical activities during the summer.

Lastly, a boat launching ramp is offered to Dorval residents from one of the prettiest bays on Lake Saint-Louis. It is located in Pine Beach Park, at the corner of chemin du Bord-du-Lac–Lakeshore and Saint-Louis Avenue.

As well, the City offers various skating options to its citizens, whether it be outside or inside one of its two arenas.

Combine tennis, racquetball, table tennis, and badminton, and you'll get pickleball, a sport that is becoming more and more popular in Canada.

The hard-surfaced racket is inspired by that of table tennis and racquetball and the holey plastic ball is similar to that used by cosom hockey. Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles, and field sizes are comparable to badminton.

Enjoy a great experience! The Adventure Quest Camp has been specifically designed to better accommodate younger teens. Organized by Dorval’s Teen Zone, it promises you a summer filled with activities and fun experiences!

This camp, intended for teens ages 11 to 15, takes place during the summer at the Teen Zone, located in the basement of the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre, in room S-008.

PARENT GUIDE

Get hands-on day camp experience with the LIT program!

Two locations:

• Dorval Day Camp at the Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre(SACC)

Designed for teens ages 14 to 17 (as of June 1), this program will help them in their quest to become a camp monitor. This hands-on program provides participants with real-life work experience, helping them develop important skills, gain knowledge, and build confidence. Leaders will learn a variety of skills and techniques by taking part in a 70-hour fieldwork experience at the Dorval Day Camp.

At each of our locations, two LITs per group will be able to complete their practical hours during the summer. The schedule will be determined according to the LITs’ availability and the needs of the City. We strongly recommend that the 70 hours be completed consecutively, for the best possible day camp experience.

Please note that the Dorval Day Camp is open Monday to Friday. Regular programming hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the daycare service is open from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All day camp LITs will be invited to take part in some staff theoretical training in June and in team meetings. These meetings will allow LITs to gain more skills and knowledge and will allow them to better understand how to organize and operate a day camp. Following their registration to the program, all LITs will be contacted by a member of our team to plan and discuss their schedule. We’ll also give the LITs two T-shirts to wear during their practical training, so they’ll be clearly identified with the program and our team.
