City of Dorval Launches an Innovative and Eco‑Friendly Pilot Project for Winter Operations

The City of Dorval is pleased to announce the implementation of a pilot project aimed at testing a new natural additive blended with road salt to reduce corrosion, protect municipal infrastructure, and lessen the environmental impact of snow removal operations.

Carried out in cooperation with IVÉO and Star’s Tech, this initiative is among the first of its kind in Quebec and reflects the municipality’s commitment to exploring innovative and sustainable solutions.

The additive is derived from the repurposing of an invasive starfish species. In several regions around the world, these starfish threaten coral reefs and must be removed to protect marine ecosystems. Transforming them into an anti‑corrosion additive allows a material otherwise destined for disposal to be diverted from the waste stream, while also helping to reduce carbon emissions associated with their incineration.

Testing a Potential Solution for the Future

This project aims to evaluate, in a real operational context, the ability of this solution to:

  • reduce corrosion on municipal equipment and vehicles;
  • limit premature wear of road infrastructure;
  • decrease chloride contamination in waterways;
  • offer better performance than traditional road salt;
  • contribute to an overall reduction in carbon footprint through the use of a repurposed product with a lower environmental impact.

Putting Innovation Into Action

The pilot project has recently begun and will run for several weeks during the winter of 2026. The results will be analyzed to determine whether a broader deployment would be appropriate. The City of Dorval is enthusiastic about the possibilities this initiative may bring!
