Latin music
Montreal-based Latin ensemble, El Balcón, is a collective that composes and arranges as one. They came together with a common love for traditional music from around the world and a desire to explore new possibilities in acoustic sound and groove.
This prolific group began by making creative arrangements of traditional tunes from Mexico, where lead singer Valeria Del Marre comes from. They have evolved to composing original and innovative music that still keeps the acoustic spirit of the traditional music that inspires them. Mexican folk instruments like the jarana, reguinto, and tarima (polyrhythm foot board for traditional rhythmic dancing) blend with microtonal melodies of the east on the violin and oud. All of this is grounded with the earthy touch of an upright bass and an array of masterful percussion including the cajon, riqq, pandeiro, and quijada del burro (donkey jaw bone).
In the event of poor weather or extreme heat, performances will be held at the Sarto-Desnoyers Community Centre.
