A storm sewer collector is a pipe that collects rainwater from the local sewer system and carries it to larger pipes called outfalls, which then flow into waterways after minimal filtration.
The planned work involves the rehabilitation of the Smith collector, between Carson Avenue and Sims Place, using a lining technique. This work aims to ensure structural integrity, improve hydraulic capacity, correct physical deficiencies, eliminate infiltration, and extend the service life of the storm sewer.
Cleaning and inspection work is also planned on the sewer located between Sims Place and Terrasse du Bord-du-Lac–Lakeshore.
Rehabilitation by lining
This technique involves inserting a liner inside the existing sewer pipe, starting from the existing manholes. The liner is deployed using air. It is then hardened with hot water, steam, or ultraviolet (UV) light. This extends the pipe's lifespan by approximately fifty years.
This technique is advantageous because it eliminates the need to fully excavate the roadway. This results in a smaller construction site, faster completion of the work and restoration of the public right-of-way, while minimizing disruption to traffic and other inconveniences.
For the population near the collector
A liaison officer assigned to the project will contact you directly to discuss your concerns regarding the upcoming construction and will remain available throughout the project to answer your questions.
Traffic disruptions
On-site signage will indicate the guidelines to follow during the works (detours, speed limits, local traffic, etc.).
Sewer service interruption
A door sign specifying the date, time and all the details will be distributed in advance to affected residences and businesses.
Parking
Parking spaces may be used to establish a security perimeter and to store equipment and materials. Check the area signage as it may be modified as needed.
The construction site and sequence of works
The work will take place in four phases:
Phase 1 and 2: June 2026
Phase 3: August 2026
Phase 4: October 2026 (Carson Avenue)
